Typically, whether or not you’re going to qualify for long-term disability benefits is going to come down to the policy, itself. There’s going to need to be a period of time, an exemption period, or an exclusion period, where you’re unable to work because of your injury, disability, or illness. That’s going to vary policy to policy, but typically speaking, it’s 80 days consecutively where you’re unable to work. Now, in order to prove that you’re unable to work, you’re also going to need medical documentation showing that the reason that you can’t work is directly related again to your illness, injury, or disability. And this may also involve a medical certificate from either your doctor or potentially a doctor from the long-term disability provider, as well, determining that you’re unable to work.
