What happens when you contact us?
- Tell us what’s going on. A member of our Client Solutions Team will listen, answer questions about our process, and ask a few questions to understand your situation.
- Learn about your options. If your matter is one we may be able to help with, we’ll explain what happens next and arrange a free consultation with our legal team.
- Decide what feels right for you. You can ask questions and take time to decide whether Litco Law is the right fit. There’s no pressure to move forward.
If your matter falls outside the areas of law we handle, we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction. We’ll help you find the solution, even if we’re not it.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. There’s no charge for your consultation and no obligation to hire us afterward. You can use the conversation to ask questions, better understand your options, and decide what you’d like to do next.
If we’re able to take on your matter, we’ll explain how our fees work before you decide whether to proceed. We never bill by the hour, and we’ll be clear about any fees and expenses that may apply to your situation.
What kinds of legal matters can you ask us about?
Litco Law offers free consultations for matters involving:
- Personal Injury Law, including motor vehicle accidents and slip and falls
- Employment Law, including wrongful dismissal and severance
- Long Term Disability Law claims
- Medical Malpractice
- Legal Malpractice
You don’t need to know which category your situation fits into. Tell us what happened, and we’ll help you find the right starting point.
Litco Law offers legal help in 80+ languages.
If English isn’t your first language, or you would simply feel more comfortable talking to a lawyer in your preferred language, we’re happy to arrange a professional translator for your meetings at no cost to you.
What should you have ready?
Start with what you know. You don’t need to gather every document or prepare a perfect account of what happened before reaching out.
It may help to have any relevant dates, letters, insurance information, photographs, or other documents nearby. If something else would be useful for your consultation, our team can let you know.
You’re also welcome to bring a list of questions. There are no “silly” questions when you’re trying to make an important decision. Most consultations last for 30-60 minutes, depending on factors such as the type of legal service required or the complexity of a case. Consultations can be longer if necessary, to allow the lawyer to gather all the important facts and answer all your questions.
Free initial consultations can take place at our offices in either Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Lethbridge, but we also do:
- Hospital calls
- Phone consultations
- Meetings at another convenient location
- Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, or other video consultations
Do I have to hire Litco Law after the consultation?
No. The consultation is a chance to get information and see whether we’re a good fit for each other. You’re free to consider your options before making a decision.
And if we believe a different path may make more sense for you, we’ll tell you.
How do legal fees work if I decide to move forward?
That depends on the type of legal matter. For personal injury claims and employment claims, we work on a contingency fee basis, which means you don’t pay us anything unless and until your claim is resolved. We also advance the expenses needed to pursue your claim, called disbursements. We’ll explain the agreement, including how fees and expenses are handled, before you sign anything.
At Litco Law:
- We never bill by the hour
- Consultations are always free
- We work on contingency for injury claims and employment claims
For other legal matters, we’ll explain the fee arrangement that applies to your situation during the consultation.

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Alberta?
In Alberta, you generally have two years from the accident date to start a claim or your right to do so is lost forever. Talking to us does not start a lawsuit. It tells you whether you may have a potential claim.
Care-First (Alberta’s new no-fault system) is projected to come into effect January 1, 2027. It does not apply to accidents that already happened, or that happen between now and December 31, 2026.
